For those not already in the know, this month’s Artspace Underground installment will be occurring tonight at New Haven’s aforementioned Artspace gallery. Performing will be New Haven/Boston’s Shark as well as Bridgeport’s Saint Bernadette. Shark (featuring members of Apse, The Tyler Trudeau Attempt, Chaplinesque and Instructions) are coming off a wave of glowing press for their 2009 self-titled album including mentions in the New Haven Advocate, Boston’s The Phoenix and a placing on iTunes‘ 2009 year-end best of. Their shoegaziness is apparent from the get-go with Dave Riedel of the New Haven Advocate describing their music as “a good candidate for listening in the car late at night or putting on the headphones and drifting off to wherever you want to go.” Joining Shark will be fellow CTers Saint Bernadette. Led by producer and guitarist Keith Saunders and vocalist Meredith DiMenna, the quintet offers a boozy mesh of psychedelic-meets-arena rock, with inflections of jazz, all candy-coated into sing-along choruses. I’d say this sounds like the perfect show for a rainy day in New Haven, so get yourself downtown now!

The latest installment of Artspace’s ‘Artspace Underground’ series hits the downtown gallery, exhibition and performance space this Saturday, February 20th. Local favorites Eula will be making a repeat performance at Artspace Underground following their appearance with Kid Ginseng last April. Also appearing will be the Brooklyn-based ‘sound artist’ and filmmaker Noveller (aka Sarah Lipstate) and improvisational music duo Paul Theriault and Kryssi Battalene. In addition to the music will be numerous art exhibitions and also comedian Jiwon Lee, adding yet another dimension to the multimedia experience that is Artspace Underground. As with all installations of the series, the night starts at 7pm and ends by 11pm, so make sure you eat dinner early and come by afterward. And oh yeah, drinks will be provided by the kind folks at 116 Crown.

Tweefort Expands

Tweefort Music and Art is now Tweefort Records. In an e-mail distributed today, Tweefort co-founder Danny Goodwin announced the big news. “After nearly a year of bringing pop music to New Haven, we’ve officially expanded into a free digital net label. We’ve changed our name slightly to agree with the change: TWEEFORT RECORDS. We’ll be focusing mainly on singles, split singles and EPs, but we will have some full-length albums and some select reissues.” Goodwin goes on to mention several new releases that Tweefort already has lined up including a single and EP by New York’s Chariots of Tuna, a single by New Haven’s The Fictional West and a full-on album by Women’s Basketball (a.k.a. Tyler Trudeau of the Tyler Trudeau Attempt). In addition the label will be releasing the second installment of their ‘Home and Abroad’ compilation series this February. Don’t worry though, Tweefort’s shift in focus doesn’t seem to have slowed down Danny and his wife/co-founder Aileen from promoting indie-pop shows. The duo have no less than six shows already lined up for the remainder of the Winter and Spring, including two installments of the ever-popular Artspace Underground and another installment of Elm City Popfest. For those interested in the poppier end of the indie-rock underground, we highly recommend checking out Tweefort.
