YES PLEASE, WEST ROCKERS @ Daniel Street – March 18th

Following their appearance @ Cafe 9 this Wednesday, Yes Please stops by Milford’s Daniel Street the following night for a reggae/punk showcase with fellow New Haven stalwarts the West Rockers. Among the influences listed on the band’s Myspace page are such reggae rock faves as The Toots and The Maytals and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry as well as The Clash, Beastie Boys and James Brown. Although the reggae influence is fairly evident in most of the band’s material, their sound falls closer to Sublime or more often Operation Ivy, especially the vocals/screams of singer/guitarist Ryland Tunila who at times sounds like a dead ringer for Op. Ivy’s Jesse Michaels. A quick listen to some of the band’s online material proves positive that they function well as either a live or a recording outfit (see above live footage for evidence of the former), always a promising combination. More energetic than groove heavy, although definitely adept at both, Yes Please will definitely leave you wanting more.

The Degenerics (Soul Rebel), 76% Uncertain, West Rockers @ Rudy’s – Jan. 16th
January 15, 2010, 10:03 pm

Rudy’s continues its recent winning streak of Saturday shows with a performance by The Degenerics, 76% Uncertain and the West Rockers this Saturday, January 16th. All three of these bands bring to the table a mix of hardcore, punk and reggae although in slightly different allocations depending on who you’re describing. New Jersey’s The Degenerics skirt all three of these genre sets the most, skipping from melodic punk to reggae-core to hardcore punk all in the span of three songs. Bridgeport’s veteran punk rockers 76% Uncertain generally keep it straight up punk, often the hardcore variety. Concluding the spectrum is New Haven’s West Rockers who sometimes border full-on reggae if not for some throaty vocals to add abrasion. All in all this should be a great show for anyone remotely interested in punk, hardcore or reggae (or all three, a la Bad Brains). Keep it up, Rudy’s.

Last Minute Show Update! Baby G, Pink Iron Fluff (members of Murdervan) @ Cafe 9 – TONIGHT

In a last minute bill change, New Haven’s Baby G will be filling in for a sickened Josh Decay (of the West Rockers) tonight at Cafe 9. Presented by Drinkdeeply (a.k.a. Margaret), Baby G will be joined by Pink Iron Fluff, a band which features members of local hard-rockers Murdervan. Drinkdeeply will return later this month for another show at the Nine on January 27th featuring Humanoid, Xpunx and Neurospora, all equally capable of creating a mind-deafening roar.
