ARBOREA, ALEXANDER TURNQUIST, PONYBIRD, BABY G, CABINET OF NATURAL CURIOSITIES @ The Space – March 4th

Continuing with our focus on All-Ages shows this week, Maine’s indie/folk duo Arborea will be stopping by The Space this Thursday, March 4th. Formed by husband and wife duo Buck and Shanti Curran, Arborea ‘construct a fragile, resonant world with a lingering Americana aftertaste,’ or so the BBC says. In simpler terms, Arborea bring a definite psychedelic influence to the table, only stripped down to the bare minimum in instrumentation (a banjo here, an electric guitar there). ‘Ethereal’ would be the common terminology. ‘Earthy’ would be a bit more appropriate.

Joining Arborea will be locals Ponybird and Baby G, whose shared quiet power should compliment Arborea well. Ponybird in particular has been very active on the local scene as of late and yet again fits in well with this billing. New York-based guitarist/composer Alexander Turnquist and Brooklyn based duo Cabinet of Natural Curiousities fill out the lineup nicely. For those looking for a mellow yet moving night of music, this show’s over-abundance of quality talent won’t disappoint.

Safety Meeting and Manic Productions presents BLOOD WARRIOR, SIDEWALK DAVE, GET HAUNTED, PONYBIRD @ Cafe 9 – Feb. 20th

As if the upcoming Mates of State/M.T. Bearington show on February 20th at the Space wasn’t enough for Manic Productions, a second Manic show (this one in conjunction with Safety Meeting Records) is scheduled later that same day at Cafe Nine. Performing will be the New York based Blood Warrior, New Haven’s own Sidewalk Dave and Ponybird, and New London’s Get Haunted.

Blood Warrior, described as ‘a unique take on indie-folk and more traditional music of the Americas,’ originally started as a recording project but quickly developed into much more than that. Blood Warrior’s distinct instrumentation, featuring guitars, Casios, chord organs, autoharp, marching drums, percussion and four part vocal harmonies, really keeps things fresh, as does some unexpected hooks buried within. Featuring members of O’Death and Super Monster, among others, Blood Warrior definitely seems to be worth checking out. Local alt-country/aggro-folk quartet Sidewalk Dave, primal-duo Get Haunted and the sometimes full band, sometimes stripped-down solo indie-folk Ponybird fill out the bill. Overall, a highly recommended show for fans of indie-folk and Americana.

Travis Moody Benefit w/B. WILLIE SMITH, GEORGE BAKER, THE BERNADETTES, THE MANCHURIANS, THE CROWN STREET ORCHESTRA, THE COBALT RHYTHM KINGS, THE GREG SHERROD BAND, THE LANGLEY PROJECT, PONYBIRD, ONE WAY TRACKS and more @ Cafe 9 – Feb. 21st

Cafe Nine will be holding a day-long benefit show next Sunday, February 21st for local musician Travis Moody. Moody, who was injured in a construction accident on January 7th along with his brother Rory and boss William Twyford, would often host the Sunday open jams at Cafe Nine. He is obviously a beloved part of the New Haven music community given the sheer amount of talent and musicians that will be appearing at this show. From what we know, Moody, his brother and Twyford are all doing better however still have a ways to go. In addition, all three must now face a mounting back-log of medical bills. A similar event was just hosted at Bill Miller’s in Branford which packed the place (see article in the New Haven Independent). For all those who know Travis (or even those who don’t), please make an effort to stop by Cafe 9. Not only will you get to see some great bands, you’ll also be helping out a few guys that need it.

Every want to go to a show and not have to worry about having your ears ring for days afterwards? Well, tonight’s acoustic singer/songwriter show at Cafe Nine might just be what you’re looking for. Aside from the obvious decibel drop, tonight’s acoustic show also includes performances by locals Ponybird (aka Jennifer Dauphinais), Calvin DeCutlass (The Nortons, The Tires), Shawn Bowen (of Murdervan) and Paul Panamarenko. Its a wonderful respite from the full-on rock shows of late, duly highlighting the fact that good shows don’t always have to be spectacles. Your eardrums will thank you.
